Additional Storage Space

Scanning and microfilming save storage space and reduces warehousing costs. Once stored as digital or filmed images, the paper can be destroyed and the storage space freed.

Electronic document formats and microfilm greatly reduce storage space requirements, when compared to paper documents. For instance, one gigabyte (GB) of magnetic or optical disk storage can contain from tens of thousands to over half a million double-spaced, typewritten pages.

Consequently, by using imaging or microfilming, the potential exists to store the contents of hundreds, or even thousands, of file cabinets in a small area.
